What is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a type of restorative treatment that we will often use to replace any part of a tooth’s structure that has been lost or damaged due to decay. Decay may be caused by bacteria, trauma, or from general wear and tear over time. Fillings can be made from a variety of different materials that will be determined based on your individual needs and oral health history. They can also be made to blend naturally with your original teeth to subtly maintain your beautiful smile! Fillings are built to last years and to allow you eat and drink normally, however all fillings will need to be replaced eventually.

How To Determine if You Need a Dental Filling:

If you keep up with your regular dental exams and cleanings, your dentist will be able to detect decay early! If you are experiencing any toothaches or discomfort without an appointment on your calendar, you can come in to our emergency dental clinic on Park Road any day and we can provide you with an oral exam to determine if a dental filling will help ease your pain. X-rays can also be used to find decay within your teeth that is not yet visible with just a tactile exam.

Top Reasons You May Need a Filling:

  • The most common use of a filling is to treat a cavity.
  • If your tooth is cracked or broken, it can be repaired with a filling.
  • Teeth that have been worn down (especially due to grinding at night or nail biting) can also be fixed with a dental filling.

Most people will find themselves in need of at least one dental filling during their lifetime. If you would like to come in to have your fillings examined, are worried you may be in need of this restorative treatment, or have any further questions about dental fillings call us at 704-525-3939
