Tooth Extraction Aftercare

So, you had your tooth extracted. If your tooth has been damaged by disease or trauma, then tooth extraction was a great option to get rid of that painful aching. But how can you ensure the aching does not return after treatment? At Charlotte Emergency Dental, we have come together to provide you with proper tooth extraction aftercare. 

The process of tooth extraction usually begins with an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth being extracted. This will prevent any pain from happening during the procedure. If the tooth is impacted, one of our dentists will pull back the gums and bone tissue blocking your tooth and then use forceps to grab the tooth and pull it out. The dentist will pack this now empty socket with gauze to stop the bleeding. Following the extraction, it will take a few days for the area to fully recover.  

It is advised to follow these steps to eliminate the risk of infection and have a speedy recovery. 

• Take medications as prescribed.
• Leave the gauze in place for 3 to 4 hours after surgery to help stop the bleeding, changing the gauze if it is soaked in blood. 
• Apply ice to the affected area immediately to help prevent swelling.
• Do not rinse your mouth or spit for 24 hours after extraction.
• Do not smoke. 
• Do not drink from a straw for 24 hours after extraction.
• Only eat soft foods until the extraction has healed. 
• Continue with your normal brushing and flossing routine.

It is normal to feel pressure and some pain near the extraction site. In addition, you should expect some swelling and residual bleeding. If the bleeding is constant or the pain gets worse four hours after your surgery, call us or come back in to our practice and we will help determine if any further steps need to be taken.

Other reasons to call us throughout your tooth extraction aftercare may include:

• Excessive vomiting
• Shortness of breath 
• Any sign of infection 

Over the next couple of weeks, new bone and gum tissue will grow back into your gap.
