What Qualifies As A Dental Emergency?

At Charlotte Emergency Dental, we specialize in dental emergencies. If you have a damaged tooth or some other dental condition, you need to determine whether it is an emergency needing our immediate attention. Some dental issues can be taken care of during your next appointment; however, if you have a dental emergency, it is imperative that you come and see one of our dental health care professionals as soon as you can. Here is more information on what is—and is not—a dental emergency.

Injuries From Trauma

If you have damaged a tooth, chances are pretty good that it is an emergency. You will need to consider the extent of the damage: a broken tooth, a tooth with a severe crack, a tooth that has been knocked out or knocked loose, or a tooth that is bleeding, would all be considered emergencies. Essentially, a dental emergency is something that requires treatment immediately in order to prevent the loss of a tooth, relief from severe pain, or to stop heavy or continuous bleeding.

Infected Teeth

Infected teeth can often qualify as a dental emergency. In fact, an infected tooth can even become life-threatening in some cases. If your tooth is infected, you should consult our office right away.

Not Everything Is An Emergency

If the damage to the tooth is not severe, such as a minor chip, a crown that has come loose, or something of that nature, then you are most likely not experiencing an emergency and you can address the problem during normal dental office hours.

Remember, the key consideration is whether immediate action is needed in order to prevent the loss of the tooth, relieve severe pain, or stop bleeding from a tooth or other oral tissue. If any of those things exist, or if you feel that your tooth is likely going to be permanently damaged if you don’t seek immediate treatment, you should consider it to be a dental emergency. If that is the case, contact us immediately at Charlotte Emergency Dental so we can help you find the relief you deserve.
