What is a Dental Filling?

Restorative dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by things such as trauma or cavities. Our fillings are made of composite, a white material that will blend in with the natural color of the rest of your teeth. Not only are they aesthetically beneficial, but they will protect the damage in your tooth and prevent painful tooth aches or sensitivity.

Why Do You Need a Dental Filling?

Cavities are tooth decay that has gone untreated for too long. Once a cavity has progressed to a certain point, the only way to treat it is through a dental filling. There are a few warning signs that indicate you might need a dental filling.

You may need a dental filling if any of the following is true:

  • You have a toothache or a tender tooth.
  • You feel discomfort when chewing.
  • You have tooth decay that has progressed to the point of breaking through the tooth’s surface.
  • Your tooth has a visible crack or chip in it.

How are Dental Fillings Made?

You may be wondering how a dental filling is made. First, your dentist will remove the decayed part of your tooth to make room for the filling. Then, he will clean your teeth and apply a unique tooth-colored filling material to the hole.

Dental fillings, such as composite resin, are usually made from a material designed to harden and bond with your tooth. Composite resin is usually made from a material designed to harden and bond with your teeth. Conventional dental fillings are made of ceramic, gold, silver, or different materials.

However, they are often replaced when they wear out, break, or start to cause more damage to the teeth. This is because dental fillings made of conventional materials can cause some damage to your mouth.

Types of Dental Fillings

Some of the most common types include amalgam fillings (usually made of composite resin and containing roughly 60% mercury), composite resin, and ceramic fillings.

Dental fillings come in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes, so you have many options for finding one that fits your needs. Many choose gold and ceramic dental fillings because they are more durable than others.

There are also hybrid fillings that combine the best qualities of all three types—this is particularly common with gold or silver amalgam composite fillings. One last type of filling, sometimes used in high-risk cases, is an all-ceramic filling.

All-ceramic dental fillings are made from a single material with the same composition as tooth enamel, making them much more durable than regular composites or amalgams.

Benefits of Dental Fillings

The benefits of dental fillings are apparent. They keep teeth healthy and strong, which means they’ll last a long time and be less likely to decay. They also protect against unwanted and other harmful bacteria that can cause cavities.

Even though dental fillings are a popular way to protect your teeth, you should always be careful about how you choose them. Be sure that the dentist uses quality materials and that you get the right size or shape for your mouth.

If you don’t like the look or feel of your filling, it probably isn’t for you. A good rule of thumb is to only use natural fillings in your mouth—if something feels off, it probably is!

Everyone was very nice from the moment I walked in. The doctor himself made me feel very comfortable and confident that nothing would go wrong. This place was excellent! And pain free! They saved me from having to go to an oral surgeon and he was able to get my tooth out within 10 minutes the SAME DAY I called!
